2011 Science & Math-based Art Contest (SMART)
Art for science sake - the collision between science/math and the creative arts.
The Science & Math-based Art Contest is an international competition, with its first successful round culminating at the 2011 Next Big Idea Festival. Artists from around the world were called on to creatively demonstrate a scientific or mathematical concept, principle, or phenomena through artistic media of their choosing including digital, drawing, photography, sculpture, performance, painting, fiber arts, etc.
Contest entries and winners were put on display in Fuller Lodge throughout festival day, along with the installments of Matt Wright's photospheres.

Contest Judging Criteria
- Visual Interest & Impact – how well the entry captures and holds the viewer’s attention
- Originality & Innovation – how innovative (new and original), and/or how unique (different from the other entries) the entry is
- Representation of a Scientific/Mathematical Principle or Phenomena – how the entry and the description of the entry represents and/or otherwise communicates or demonstrates interesting information about a scientific/mathematical principle or phenomena.
Fractal Challenge Commemorative Poster
The Next Big Idea's 1st Annual SMART contest included a Los Alamos Public Schools Fractal Challenge in which students from the Los Alamos Public School system were invited and encouraged to create and submit their creative math and science based fractal art work.

The Fractal art sale is a commemerative 24x36 color poster featuring the winners of the Los Alamos Public Schools Fractal Art Challenge - a cornerstone feature of the Next Big Idea's international Science & Math-based Art (SMART) contest. The Fractal Art Challenge was designed to inspire interest in science and math through artistic means through the collaboration of LAPS math and art coordinators and Albuquerque-based Fractal Foundation.
